People and Effectiveness

People make things happen. Strategies, mission statements, corporate visions, marketing campaigns, motivational drives, "smile training", lean operations, six sigma quality, health and safety programmes and sales drives all come to nothing if the people in your organisation do not support them or are not being effective.

Of course, to get everyone marching and delivering in unison will require someone who is a personnel expert, a visionary leader, a marketing guru as well as a brilliant engineer and a superstar in sales all at the same time.

This is not always easy to achieve and many companies adopt all manners of coaching and development to improve the effectiveness of their people.

Our approach is different.

-   an   Ideas article

Instead of following the latest management model (and abandoning last month's flavour), we suggest that you aim to be "ready".

Ready for whatever comes your way.

To be ready means you are not so busy struggling with your daily tasks that you missed both opportunities or threats.

We look at being ready in the following four areas:

  • Depth - Awareness of one’s Knowledge; Skills; Competence; and Experience

“Depth” is about what you know, knowing what you can do, how to do it and also how well you can do it. Once an individual is aware of his/her capabilities, effectiveness increases.

  • Doing - Self-management; Problem solving; Time management; Taking initiative; and Ability to learn

“Doing” is about the way individual carry out daily and how unexpected issues are likely to be resolved.

  • Dealing - Leadership; Being the #2; Team work; Influencing others

“Dealing” is about working with other people, whether one is in a leadership position or otherwise. It also looks at how effectiveness can be enhanced through influencing others and how to disagree without damaging relationships.

  • Developing - Big picture; Marketing yourself; networking; Organisational awareness

“Developing” is about maximising an individual’s personal aspirations. It is about working within the organisation rather than just the team and seeing the bigger picture within context of one’s daily role.

Don't rely on "luck"- be "ready" instead
