NoWaste - a lean construction initiative

Project NoWaste is divided in two phases - Phase 1 describes activities up to the end of September 2004 and Phase 2 takes it forward to the current date.

Phase 1: 2003-04 Phase 2: 2004-current

Phase 1: Project NoWaste - Linking Lean Construction to a Low-Carbon Economy

The construction sector contributes to about 10% of the UK GDP, but a lot of that is waste. The Environment Agency estimated that between 15-20% of all construction materials delivered to construction sites end up for disposal in skips.

This has a significant impact on CO2 emissions as those skip loads also represent a waste of the embedded energy in the construction materials and makes a mockery of the efforts by the UK Government and the Carbon Trust in getting upstream suppliers to reduce their unit energy cost of production.

Project NoW is designed to address the issue of energy use on construction sites (including embedded energy) and linking this to Lean Construction and waste reduction.

Project outcomes:

The project started in September 2003 and was completed in December 2004. We have carried out pilot trials at two projects:

Teams at both sites also completed their NVQ programmes in Waste Operations Management.

Phase 2: NoWaste - Spreading award-winning good practice

Since October 2004, Bovis Lend Lease has been running NoWaste with Greenfile Developments at various Bovis lend Lease projects such as the Unilever House refurbishment programme at Blackfrairs, London.

The NoWaste toolkit was extended with content developed by Project Sus'D, another Greenfile Developments construction sector project. It also received the support of CITB-ConstructionSkills through a pilot study into project-based training.

NoWaste has been implemented at other Bovis Lend Lease projects: Bankside 123, the Grand Arcade in Cambridge, King's College, London and the More London complex by London Bridge and at Kings Waterfront in Liverpool.
